What is MRT & LEAP?

What are food sensitivities?

Food sensitivities are the result of your immune system reacting to a particular food. Food sensitivities often cause delayed reactions making it difficult to pin down the culprit in your diet causing symptoms ranging from fatigue to bloating to joint pain.

Let’s get a little science-y here for a second. Food allergies use just one pathway of the immune system, whereas food sensitivities go through two pathways that can cause symptoms. These reactions involve antibodies or white blood cells which release immune chemicals called mediators. These mediators that are released from your white blood cells cause those symptoms you’ve been struggling with. Other common food sensitivity symptoms include:

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Bloating or abdominal discomfort

  • Migraines

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Eczema or acne

  • Joint pain

  • Acid reflux

The symptoms you feel are highly likely to be directly related to the food you eat. We just need to figure out the trigger! Once we discover those triggering foods or chemicals, we can work to remove which will reduce the inflammation and start your body on its path to healing. Food sensitivity symptoms tend to be chronic because every time we eat reactive foods, mediators are released causing symptoms.

Each and every one of us has a unique reaction to foods. If you have a feeling a certain food in your diet is causing symptoms, you may want to break the cycle and think about food sensitivity testing.

What is the Mediator Release Test?

The Mediator Release Test (MRT) is a food sensitivity test that analyzes your unique response to 170 foods and chemicals. A sample of your blood is tested against each of the foods and chemicals and the change in liquids to solids ratio of the blood after exposure indicates that one’s immune cells have released chemical mediators (histamine, prostaglandins, cytokines, etc). These mediators cause the symptoms of food sensitivities! Your results will show a bar graph that shows the magnitude of your unique response to each of the foods and chemicals tested.

You've probably seen food sensitivity kits at the store. How is MRT different?

Unlike kits that can be purchased over the counter (Everlywell, etc), MRT is able to detect all types of food sensitivity reactions by measuring the release of mediators. Other tests look at just one pathway of food sensitivities called IgG antibodies. IgG antibodies may increase just as a result of eating a food, meaning that a positive result may just tell us that you’ve eaten that food recently. This doesn’t tell us if you truly have a sensitivity to this food!

The biggest difference between MRT and anything you can get over the counter is the elimination diet protocol that works hand in hand with your results. What good is knowing your sensitivities without knowing what to do with that information?! I introduce to you the LEAP (Lifestyle Eating and Performance) Elimination diet protocol.

As a registered dietitian and Certified LEAP Therapist, I have the training required to help interpret your MRT results and guide you through the LEAP elimination diet. Treating your sensitivities is more than just avoiding your highly reactive foods.

No two food sensitivities are the same

Together, we will work through a personalized elimination diet using results individual to your body and sensitivities. This diet protocol moves through different phases over a time period of roughly two months. In the first two weeks of your individualized LEAP diet you can expect to eat about 30 of your lowest reactive foods. Would you believe that many people experience a 50 to 70% reduction in the severity and/or frequency of symptoms?! Many people even feel relief within 10 days of starting the LEAP diet! Slowly we will begin to add foods back into your diet and monitor any symptoms or reactions you may be experiencing to tailor your diet to one that’s healing for you. The name of the game here is long term success, personal to you!

I can see the wheels turning. Think youre a good candidate for MRT and LEAP?

  • Are you frustrated and fed up with chronic stomach problems?

  • Is your physician at the end of their rope trying to find a solution or medication that gives you any relief?

  • Have you tried an elimination diet without much success or changes?

  • Do you suffer from frequent headaches, joint pain, digestive issues or acne?

  • Do you have one of the following conditions: IBS, chronic migraines, fribromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, heartburn, fatigue or brain fog?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be a great candidate for MRT and LEAP!

The LEAP Elimination Protocol may not be for you if:

  • You’re looking for a quick fix

  • You would rather take medication than getting to the root of the problem

  • You can’t make significant changes for at least one month

  • You throw in the towel easily

  • You aren’t interested in cooking for yourself, at least for about a month’s time

While I will be your biggest cheerleader and support through this, at the end of the day I can’t do the work for you! Individual motivation to make major changes is absolutely necessary to have the best chances at success in eliminating symptoms and helping you lead a healthy, happy life!
